NCAA Champs Day 2

Sacramento, CA- Today was the second day of qualifying for the meet. Alleyne Lett started off the day poorly running about a half second off his personal best in the 110H (the first event of the second day of the decathlon). Luckily he was able to make up for it with a collegiate decathlon record in the discus and strong performances in the remaining three events to hang on for seventh place and an all-important 2 team points. While seemingly insignicant, the small points from unexpected performances are almost always the ones that decide who wins the team championship. In the other events we advanced everyone on the men's side that we needed to get through........unfortunately so did our top competitors Arkansas and Florida. In fact, Florida had some people who weren't expected to score turn in big performance and advance to the finals.

The men's 200m is definitely going to be the event of the meet. Tyson Gay of Arkansas threw down a blazing 19.93 but Xavier Carter (LSU) ran a strong 20.14 in the same heat to post the second fastest time of the day. Gay got out real fast and had about a 4m lead on Carter at the 100m mark but Carter blasted the next 70m and closed the gap to about a meter before smartly shutting down the engines. The top 2 from the prelims advanced so there wasn't any need to chase down Gay and "win" the prelims. I wouldn't be surprised if 3 guys dip below 20 seconds in the final. If so, I'm sure Carter will be one of them, I'm just hoping he'll be the fastest one.
