Russian Hurdles[read more]

What I like about the refinement of today is that many coaches are using PVC pipe hurdles to make the walk-overs lower so that the pelvis doesn't get into lumbar movements. I also like the change in hurdle heights so that spinal flexion can be decreased so it's more of a lateral squat. The key take away is to look at refining things instead of tossing the baby with the bathwater. Most that attac [...]

Another Legend Passes: Yuri Verkhoskansky[read more]

I just received the following email from a colleague of mine. With sadness, I am writing to inform everyone of the passing of Dr Yuri Verkhoshansky on June 23. He was easily one of the fields greatest minds in history. His contributions are monumental and have heavily influenced all great coaches. Personally, I have been honored to be his publisher and representative to the the english speaking wor [...]

The God Complex[read more]

Many coaches are wondering if some experts have a god complex. Think about it. It's no longer interesting or ego serving just to get people bigger-faster-stronger when you can bring back their careers back to life as well. While I will listen to Doctors share what is going on with an MRI to learn, it's a collaborative effort. I will not drop my track pants for chinos unless it's appropriate bec [...]

Jade Ellis update[read more]

For those who've been read about and supported Jade Ellis's Achilles tendon rupture and subsequent training return to training I figured you might be interested in seeing this video about Jade that was recently done by our largest news station. You can also read a short accompanying article HERE. If you look close in the video you'll also see none other than our very own elitetrack.com member, [...]

Mediacast Feedback[read more]

"Carl I was left with a few questions about foot mechanics and how to coach it. Could you share more about training the feet using the Ray Key thing? I was left wondering about the actual application of training the feet. Good stuff so far, for 24 mediacasts the price is great!"I don't coach foot mechanics as that is too advanced for me! I do put effort to have overall good looking technique wi [...]

Evolution of Core Training: Nick Tumminello[read more]

Nick did a great job with this video. In a simple summary he was articulate, clean, pragmatic, logical, and of course precise. This is evolution of Weinstein pulley work (more commonly known as pallof presses to those that don't remember some of the hammer battles in the 90s) is exactly what we need. Sensible solutions to challenging the core. One aspect that I think Nick may wish to think about [...]

Lessons for Lower Extremity Power[read more]

Pragmatic Power? After Bret Contreras and even Nick Tumminello's group therapy session at the summit, I decided to post some of my hardest lessons learned with regards to developing lower extremity power. I have made a lot of small mistakes in my coaching career and much of it was hard to decipher later, as small mistakes don't show up quickly if people are not getting hurt or not improving. Her [...]

Practical Magic[read more]

Many times a stage will share what the illusionist wants you to see. This happens now on the internet and at some seminars where the presenter shares videos of athletes, before and after pictures of posture, and of course corrective exercises that feed the audience. Tom Myers did a great job of sharing 18-24 months of work, in order to work. If I was a GA at a D1 program I would videotape guys lif [...]

Re-Examining Peaking[read more]

We're in the thick of the championship season for many high schoolers and collegiate athletes. High school coaches often have to deal with conference championships, districts, regionals, state championships and possibly a national meet. Collegiate coaches are dealing with conference championships, NCAA regionals, NCAA championships and then possibly USATF Jr or Sr championships. These lengthy cha [...]
