he’s really kinda been stuggling since 2005...(stuck at 8.30m,) and i was watching some videos and saw some interesting things…

when he jumped 8.60m i thought he technique was near to perfect, expecially his take off range, from reach to pull back…

when watching his take off in Osaka, it was so so different to a couple of years before…

im a big beleive that the take off leg has to reach and pull back very aggresively and therefore finish very high and far back behind the athletes butt...during the 8.60m pic you can clearly see this...Angles of his take off leg and free leg are totally different, and this is as far back as his take off leg goes on the 8.20m jump in Osaka, which would suggest he didnt use his glutes or hamstrings nearly as much as he did on the 8.60m one…

i think this is the key to a good take off at speed…

thoughts?

I have a video of me jumping 5'10" to tie for first, then missing 3 attempts at 5'11". I would like to know what you think of the jump, approach, bar clearance, etc. and especially the take-off spot. I have a feeling it's too far out and I'm jumping too much horizontally. I don't know though. I really need help, because I feel I have the height for 6' if I can get my form down, and my goal for the spring is 6'2". By the way, on all the misses, I hit the bar with my butt. Maybe my hamstring on the 2nd miss, I have yet to clip it off with the calves. Maybe I'm kicking too early?

I competed in an open meet this weekend in the triple jump. I have been left, left, right jumper my whole career (4 years). My first two jumps were scratches and I got one measured at 42 feet (my pr was 47’), the next two jumps I just ran through because my old injury hurts when I jump anyway (left hip extensor). So on my last jump (6th attempt) I decided to switch legs, and figured I could at least get a 45 out of it. I went 48’ 10” on my last jump (this is the first time I’ve ever jumped Right Right Left)! My only mental que before I jumped was to bound right right left and go for distance. My left hip extensor has hurt all year on every jump (furthest this year was 45 on this left left right). Last year I was injured the whole year and got no marks, and same with the year before that. Has anyone else tried switching legs to see what happens? Has anyone experienced a freak outcome like this after two years of injury? I’ve been trying to understand why and if I should stick with right right left or go left left right? Since it was my first time jumping right right left I could probably go further?

I have been browsing the existing posts on the forum about high jumping. I would like to start a thread dealing with how the approach, takeoff and flight dynamics can work together to produce a jump that wastes as little of the energy you put into the jump as possible. I will start with a statement of my basic premises, and add detail in subsequent posts.

The basic premises are:

1. All the rotations that are necessary for efficient bar clearance during the flight must be present, at appropriate rates, at the beginning of the flight. This means that they must be started during the takeoff drive. As I will explain later, the necessary rotations will produce a half-cartwheel with a half twist during the flight. The jumper will land up-side-down and facing in the direction of travel.

2. The highest flight path you can attain is one in which the impulse velocity at takeoff is directed vertically as viewed from the front or rear of the jumper at takeoff (separation from the ground). Taking off at any other angle reduces the upward velocity at takeoff and reduces the height attained by the jumper’s center of mass.

3. The center of mass of the jumper should reach the high point of the flight directly over the center, the low point, of the bar.

4. The horizontal velocity of the of the jumper that is left over from the jumper’s approach run should be used to “get into the pit”. None of the impulse of the takeoff drive should be diverted for this purpose (see #3).

5. All of the above must be set up by the approach. If the approach is wrong, you can not fix the problem by anything you do later in the process.

6. The approach should designed to be easy to visualize and easy to adjust to meet the criteria above.

More later

For those I know I should make sure I don’t plantar flex the left foot on hop landing, but the jumps in generally don’t feel and look right, I feel like I am holding back while jumping, and the landing of the hop is always hard and the step is flat.

I appreciate any input.

Thanks

Can I use sprinting spikes for TJ? I heard there is a heel to toe action, and that might be painful with Sprinting spikes. All I have is sprinting spikes (that I LJ with) and high jump spikes.

To be honest a lot of the tracks around me are asphalt, but the bigger meets are rubber. I really don't want to spend more money on another pair of spikes until I know that this is an event I can accel in. I'm only a sophomore in HS and have never attempted a TJ.

The coach said I could defenitely try it since I took 1st in HJ and 3rd in LJ (first time ever longjumping) in the last meet.

I just added LJ and TJ to my events. I can get over 17' in LJ, but lots of times I stutter and will only get like 16'. I don't notice it, but everyone else says I get choppy steps. I've only gone through TJ about 3 run throughs, so anything that helps with LJ will probably help my TJ approach as well. I'm pretty good at hitting the board, it's just the speed at which I hit it.

Any advice? Should I post a video of the meet tommorrow?
