On your last step in the javelin what is a good cue to twist your hips into the throw. I use “turn your foot” in the disc and shot, but with jav boots you can’t really turn the foot because the spikes are planted in the ground. So what is a good cue to get your hips into it?

Random question. I was throwing shot randomly today for warmup and I threw like 30’ from a stand. How hard is it to throw 40’? Meaning, what physical capabilities are required and how hard is it to learn the glide with decent proficiency? How much does a glide “approach” add to a power position throw? Shot put has always fascinated me especially now because our college conference is super weak (33’ girls and 40’ guys medaling).

I am curious to know if anyone has any suggestions for a good weightlifting routine…to add strength and lean muscle (a little bit of weight but not too too much) I plan on working out 4 days a week in the weight room and 2 days of running with one day off.

I am trying to train for discus and have the goal to throw mid-190’s. I’m 6’8” and 265 right now with my personal best at 160’.

Lifting Exercises, plyos, running, technique suggestions would be great.

Would taking some throws with the opposite hand in practice have the potential to help performance in the shot and disc?

I have read about how stimulus to one side of the body can crossover and affect the other side. An example would be a sprinter with an injured leg continuing to lift with the healthy leg. Could throws with the opposite hand have the same crossover effect and increase the overall stimulus?

When you are rotating in the disc, it is easy to start with hip-shoulder seperation in the back of the ring. But in the shot, it seems more awkward. When I glide, I have been starting in the back with no separation, gliding across the ring, then activate my hips by turning my foot, then shoulders, etc.
I question this because I have heard that you do that only in the disc, which I rotate in, vs. in the shot, where I don’t rotate.
I have been told that I should activate my hips by pushing straight through my rear leg to get the hip drive. To push straight through I was shown that I should glide and land with a wide base, with my hips partially open, with separation during the whole glide, and then throw. To go across the ring with the hips open to the direction of the throw already seems wrong to me, I feel like I would be losing alot of potential power. Also, I don’t feel right with a wide base, I feel that you don’t get the high release point or the bent leg drive with a wide base. On the other hand, I was told it is easier to stay low across the ring with a partially open stance.
There used to be a really good article called “Critical Factors in the Shot Put” in here, but I can’t find it anymore.
