I really need some hurdle help.

I am coaching a hurdler (female, age 16) who has good potential. But I cannot get her to hurdle off the ball of her foot rather than flat-footed or sometimes even heel-toe. She sprints on the balls of her feet. Any ideas for me? Thanks.

Can older athlete learn to hurdle?

I participate in masters track - I do the 100, 200, 400 and long jump. I am thinking about learning to hurdle. I am F53. I hope it possible to learn to hurdle even though I didn’t learn it when I was younger.

My question is about training hurdles. I wanted to buy some of those collapsing hurdles. Someone told me don’t do that because then I will be afraid of “real” hurdles. My height is 30” for the next few years then it drops at age 60.

I assume I should start with very low hurdles just to get the basic idea. I have a coach who helps me but he didnt’ offer any opinion on whether I should get collapsing hurdles first or not.

thanks.

Speedtrap & Hurdle touchdowns

I am planning on purchasing a Speedtrap II. One of the things I would like to do with it is measure hurdle touchdowns in practice. Has anyone ever done this before and if you have, where do you put the sensors?

Thanks!

100 meter time and 110 H time.

Is there any data or conversions from a 100 meter dash time and what a 110 meter Hurdle time should be?

300H - Race Distribution

I have received mixed recommendations regarding pace and effort distribution in the 300 hurdles for high school athletes (male & female).

Should this race be run as an “all out” effort start to finish or should the hurdler develope an “optimal” pace by conserving some energy/effort initally as w/the 400M and 400H.

cut step and split position from take off foot

Two things....

(1) Anyone deal with trying to improve a cut step? How does one evaluate one?

(2) If an athlete is not getting full extension off of the take off foot to delay the timing of the trail leg but to speed it up ala Boo.

What are some coaching concepts to ensure a full extension is used.

http://forums.athleticscoaching.ca/viewtopic.php?t=129

“ The trail leg should be quick, but late. When I am standing behind the hurdlers, I also look for some time delay between the execution of the lead leg and the trail leg. When the lead and trail leg are not separated by time, I know they are not displacing and are usually too close to the hurdle.”

400m Hurdle Tempo

So, I do the DEC and our Coach wants me to run the 400IH for conditioning/points for races at smaller invites. I was thinking, if I ran the workouts at slow enough speed, just to get rhythm and form down, could I treat those workouts as tempo/recovery? Sample week:

Saturday: Meet Day
Sunday: General Strength circuit
Monday: Hurdle Mobility, throws, PV, upper weights
Tuesday:Weights Lower (in the morning), Long Jump, High Jump, SE1
Wednesday: throws form, PV, 400IH,
Thursday: 110HH, LJ run throughs, low volume SE1
Friday: Full warmup
Saturday: meet day

Hips

I have an athlete who looks great into and over the hurdle. However, when he lands his hips sink, which causes him to lean backward and it seems as though he almost stops. He looks great in all of the drills we do but as soon as he begins to run the hurdles this problem occurs. Is it just a matter of strength or could it be a flaw in his take off? I have been racking my brain trying to figure out the cause of this problem. Are there any drills that can done to help with this? What are some cues I can use to help him correct this problem? Thank you in advance for your help.

Trail leg cues

What are some cues for the trail leg to help keep that toe pointed up. When I try to point it up and to the side when I bring it over the hurdle it points down or it dorsiflexes, and it’s driving me nuts. And don’t tell me that if you do everything right up to that point it will happen naturally because it doesn’t for me, I just need a cue, or some word, or something.

How do you get lower on the hurdle...do you work to increase your flexablity, or just over time with drills you’ll get better???? This is refering to the 100 hurdles
