you also jump over 7.5m. I don't believe pope jumps close to this. A guy I knew in high school 5'7" hj'd 6'6" w/ shotty tech, lj 23', run sub 11 fat, very strong, does not have a 38" vert.

i worked with a couple guys who had nba tryouts, they do standing vj from standing no steps and standing 2 step approach. 38 isnt unheard of, so it could be true, but since i get free plane tickets i may have to come see this shizzle.

This is a funny thread! Of course calves are important: a minor injury there and you wonâ??t leave the ground â?? at least not willingly. Calves are involved, always!

However, when we tested power output (reactivity) for calf jumps (watts), it became somewhat clear that calf strength measured in isolation didnâ??t always determine power on the mat. Someone could press over 600kg in isolation, yet longer ground contact times at the mat prevented them from reaching high watt values. It was evident that those who reached the highest watts during calf jumps, in fact, did their jumps with a slight knee bend, thus shortening the ground contact times significantly. The best performers managed between 86-112W and ground contact times were between 132-128ms â?? if I remember correctly (it was many many years ago).

By having a slight knee bend, the ground contact becomes faster because it prevents your heels from travelling to far down, thus you are instantly ready to leave the ground at touch if you only keep them tensed. Therefore, Iâ??m somewhat sceptical about calf work done in isolation, especially when keeping your legs straight; thereâ??s no time to use the whole range of movement if you initiate the movement from your calves.

On the other hand, calf work could serve as rehabilitation and perhaps even in realizing the whole motor pattern from toe to hip. Maybe one could do them with a slight knee bend then (letting the claves follow the initial push from the hip)? I wouldnâ??t have them as a primary lift thou.

Worked hard in the strength and conditioning program during the winter ... Bench pressed 320 pounds, posted a 38-inch vertical jump and ran a 4.33 forty on the way to Iron Hokie honors ...
