97 kilos sounds a bit heavy, doesn't it?

I'm 6'1" and I'm looking to be about 86 kg for competition (I'm 90 kg right now).

Really though, it depends on how well your CNS fires. If you need to gain weight to get a more favorable strength to weight ratio, then gain weight. However, if you're like Jonathan Edwards and have a great CNS, you can afford to stay a string bean.

85kg sounds better than 97kg to me. 97kg sounds more appropriate for a decathlete.

How can anyone answer this?

Individual characterisitcs, power output and genetics aside, is there an equation or guideline of what weight a track & field athlete should be just by knowing his/her height?

I've never heard of an equation or hard guideline. My recommendation was based on looking at the average weights of top performers.

well im 235lbs at 6'2"(12-14%), i dont feel its slowing me down but i could use a little weight reduction to the 10% area. although ive been at sub 10 before and felt sick and weak. my endocrine likes 12+ for optimal performance

I can say with 99% assurance that you'd be faster if you lost some weight. I've never seen someone in that weight range who didn't get faster by dropping some weight. The improvements would be more readily visible the greater the distance you run….for 10m you might not notice your'e faster but over 100m and 200m I'm pretty sure you would.

exactly, altough these things can often be person-specific, as a 6'2 (1.88m) sprinter (and not a participant in another sport???...ie, footballer using track as off season training), then anything between 80-90kg (180-200) would probally be best.

yeah,  but those 10kg can make a huge difference,  especially if 5 and more of them are fat : )

lol yes fair enuf, I spose i was taking into account individual body types.

I think asafa powell is 1.88m (6'2) and 84kg (185) off memory so obviously we'll go with that being the 'perfect' specimen lol
