well, the cockysprinter is back. i guess you cant deny where you come from right? this could very well be my last season in track (2008). ive decided after taking two years off, that this is something i really want to do. there were a lot of reasons why i took this time off of track, and i think ive matured a lot. either way, if i achieve my goals this year, i will consider continuing with track. if not, then i will retire and go on with martial arts, which i believe is my future. for those that dont know me, here it goes:
lifts
powerclean: 205x1
deadlift: 335x1
squat: 235 after 800 time trial, never did a lot of squatting
bench: 205x1
goals
60m hurdles: 8.5
110 hurdles: 14.5
i will start strict track training in october. ill run other events, but i have no real goals for them. until then, ill be training martial arts mostly, and update on a weekly basis. im out with an injury to my chest, so i dont know how much longer that will be.
I'd be 15% body fat too ( or more) if my grandma owned a Mexican restaurant
On topic: how did you injure your chest?
he said he injured his chest by lifting a soft taco before his sprint workout 2 weeks ago.
yeah i was going for a new PR, 225 soft taco powerclean. no seriously, i was thrown in martial arts and had a freak landing where i hit the ground on my side and my shoulders rotated in front of my chest and my sparring partner landing on top of my top shoulder. i hurt my wrist, pec, rib, and neck. everything is healed now except the pec, which only bothers me in the morning or if i try to grapple. i can run, which combined with coaching some kids at my high school has inspired me to return to the track.
and actually, i dont think ive been under 10% bodyfat since i was 15. when i went to college in spokane, i stopped running and lifting all the time, which led to me gaining 10 pounds. even though i was in martial arts 4-6 days a week, it just wasnt enough to keep me lean. i was measured at 14-15% bf in one of my sports science classes.

this week i went to the track a few times and martial arts on tuesday. i did some hurdles today and some power cleans. getting up to 135 on powercleans is still cake, i repped it easily. i think i can start squatting, but benching is still out because of the chest injury.

ive done a lot more sprintin this week and a little bit of hurdles. ive also front squatted and powercleaned, i was repping 135 again with stuff left in the tank. ive still got the top speed, though my start has greatly suffered from the lack of strength. my chest and nerves are still out of whack. you know youre messed up when you try to bench and it hurts your neck. :wink1:

well im back into martial arts about 2 days a week. i can spar full force with my neck, though it does get a little stiff for the next day or two. ive done some more cleans, and upped to 153 for sets of 3. that puts my estimated max at around 170-175, only 30-40 pounds below my max. i think thats pretty good, it means i can easily be back to top form by the start of real training (barring this stupid neck injury). i havent tried to bench yet, but maybe i will soon. ive even done a couple of tempo sessions, which has always been my bane. ive been trying a 'new' sprint form which i like, but i believe that there truly is room for style in sprinting, it isnt the same for everyone. ill try to update this more often, but its a little hard since im trying to do about 4 things at once.
for future reference, i believe in about 5 different sprint forms:
acceleration
erect as soon as possible (lots of 80s sprinters, hurdlers)
natural progression (many modern sprinters, long sprinters)
drive phase (mo greene being most prominent, others use it too)
sprint position
stride frequency (montgomery, powell)
stride lenth (ben johnson, mo greene, gatlin)
each one has pros and cons and i think they can all be mixed and matched depending on event and conditions.
today was my first day trying to actually do something with the weights instead of dinking around. the first two sets were a bit awkward, but i started getting into the groove on the third set. my form isnt real tight but im also not hook gripping. i injured my right wrist in jiujitsu a long time ago and double overhand hurts it. ill try hooking again when i feel comfortable with overhand. thank god cleans dont aggravate my neck, and i hope it heals completely soon. ill try and do tempo tomorrow, then ill do jiujitsu wednesday and/or friday and try to get a speed/lifting day on thursday or friday. im supposed to start coaching next week, but i dont think people are actually going to be there yet.
this isnt really training related but i was just reading through my old training journal and everything came rushing back. i try not to think about some of the things that happened and now that its been almost 2 years its weird seeing and remembering how i reacted. seing how dedicated i was to track back then too, it makes me wonder if i can do it again. ive been continually frustrated and thwarted in a lot of things and makes me wonder if its time to move on or if i really should make a comeback. the thing that upsets and frustrates me is that i dont feel i left it all on the track. i shouldve at least been at state, probably in the state final. i dont feel like i gave it my best and came up short. i feel like i just had bad luck. but on the other hand, i have to be really dedicated to make it over 42 inch hurdles in less than 15 seconds. if anyone could ever make the jump its me, but its also frustrating. i cant even do regular hurdles right now, how do i expect to make it over 42s? im not 6' and im not particularly talented. im a 5'9" caveman with a serious problem with authority and probably serious mental issues. ive gotten fat, weak, and less motivated. i live with my mom, have no real desire to go to college, where the hell do i really go? ive proven i can coach, run, kick ass, teach martial arts, etc. but what does that leave me? its not like im so amazing at those i can make millions. i feel like im in chinese finger trap of madness, pull out and it just sucks you in tighter. i dont know. /pathetic rant

the football field was in use so i used the baseball field to run some short tempo. i didnt count reps, but i did quite a few. ill be in jiujitsu tomorrow.

jiujitsu today. i did pretty bad at the kneebars, though i learned a cool kimura setup. sparring went good, i think i am improving, even though i dont really notice it. i can get full mount on most people almost at will, which is good. ill probably lift tomorrow.
a few hours later
cleans: 3x133, 3x143, 3x153, 4x3x158
i was surprised at how easy all of this was. things are coming back way better than i ever could have thought. i dont think im at peak speed levels, but i doubt id run over 12 in the 100, even with this little training. i think the break really was what i needed. my shins are starting to hurt a little bit, i hope it goes away. i probably will do jiujitsu on saturday rather than tomorrow. next week ill try and hit 5 days, 3 of which will be dedicated to fitness.
