i was watching jurassic park at a friends house the other day and it occurred to me how ridiculous a 60 mph raptor is. this is what i wrote pertaining to asafa powell vs raptor:
this is what asafa powell vs 60 mph raptor would look like:
Person Wind 10m 20m 30m 40m 50m 60m 70m 80m 90m 100m
Asafa Powell +1.0 1.73 2.85 3.67 4.54 5.38 6.22 7.06 7.91 8.77 9.63
badass raptor pssh .74 1.19 1.58 1.96 2.33 2.70 3.07 3.44 3.81 4.19
by the time asafa reached 20m, the raptor will have blown through 60, and by the time asafa got to 40, the raptor would have finished. the raptor could give asafa powell a 50m headstart, then run him down and eat him for dinner. you? better hide.
after looking around and doing some research, i decided that a 40 mph raptor was much more reasonable. my distribution looks like this:
1.13 1.81 2.41 2.99 3.56 4.12 4.68 5.24 5.81 6.39
1.13 0.68 0.60 0.58 .57 .56 .56 .56 .57 .58
obviously, that would be an insane 100m still, but it got me thinking about some other things. for one, a 60 mph raptor would have to take between four 18 foot strides per second and eight 9 foot strides per second. the most likely would be about 6 strides per second and 13.5 feet ish for every stride. now there would be an athlete. anybody got some raptors?
and in case you dont know much about dinosaurs, the raptors in jurassic park were fictional in a number of ways, the most notable being size. a real velociraptor was about 3 ft high, actually the size of a turkey. deinonychus was about 5 ft high and utahraptor was significantly larger than a human. so for all intents and purposes, the raptors in jp were fake. however, a deinonychus or a utahraptor could likely have had the 'real' performance stats of the jp raptors.
