Hi everyone

I am writing this because Iā??m curious on what the process of transferring as a div 1 college sprinter. I am currently in my freshmen season at a div 1 school and Im not really happy with how this year went or is going. I am planning on transferring does anyone have any advice on the whole process what is legal and illegal and how often coaches will give scholarship money to a transfer student who came from a school where he was on a scholarship. I pretty much need to know the whole process and how it works and what are my chances of getting money at the school I would like to transfer to.

Please note: At this point I havenā??t done or said anything about the situation as to make sure I didnā??t violate any ncaa regulations please help :(

thanks smile

If you don’t want to sit out next year you definitely want to talk to your current coach as soon as possible. He will be key in the transfer process and may even have some say as to whether you can compete next year or have to sit out the season. I personally haven’t dealt with this too much but I’m sure one of the other DI coaches on the board should be able to offer some insight.

if youre transfering down you will not have to sit out a season. if youre going from d1 to d1 you will with or without a “Release”. all i “Release” is is a formallity (respect type of thing) and allows you to communicate with oter coaches so it is not an NCAA violation. You can contact them without a release and they can respond but they cannot contact you. Some will not even talk to you without a Release.

If you are interested in a certain school or schools have a release sent to them and let the coach know at those schools know you are interested.  Give them a way to contact you when the release arrives.

I would suggest that you talk to your coach although technically you don’t have to.  Your compliance person would send the release to the other compliance person.  If you get a release you can compete next year.
Talk to your coach first and right now so they can work on replacing you and you are much more likely to get the release.  I don’t think there are many coaches that would deny your release.

i would talk to your coach…because once you talk to another school they have to send a release request anyway… it’s **always** better for them to find out from you first. that way it doesn’t look like you’re sneaking around or being ungrateful.
