I saw this earlier too. I hope Powell and Gay can stay injury free next season so we can see a few solid Bolt/Powell/Gay races. It seems possible that there might be three men running sub 9.7 next year.
With proper choreography (Bolt, I’m looking your way), we might even see these three men chorus-line kick the last 25 meters and tie for first with a 9.9.
I wonder if Powell’s body will hold up long enough to be competitive at the 2012 Olympics in London..? Or maybe a better question is, will anybody be able to challenge Usain Bolt by then? Seriously he is so far ahead of the pack right now it’s hard to imagine anyone making that kind of progress besides MAYBE Powell or Tyson Gay.
Fast forward to 4:50 for the side view where you can see a great view of Asafa’s mechanics from the side. Make sure you click High quality for best viewing.

this will not be on US Television, unless you have NBC Sportsnetwork, but put a marker on your calendar at Friday September 5. That is going to be the Memorial Van Damme(the last race of the season for some competitors) and the 100m battle is certain to be special. Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, and Tyson Gay are going to face-off. This will be airing on ESPN Class at 11:00PM on Friday 5, and re-airing on ESPN2 on Sunday 7 at 3:30 PM.
I know Asafa will be there. I heard the same thing about Bolt and Gay but I can’t really confirm it. Nothing is on the memorial van damme site right now.
I would like to see Asafa going into a major championship fully prepared – I don’t think we have seen that yet. He seems to do well after a championship meltdown, which also appears to indicate that, the championship, in and of itself, might play a role as springboard for good times later on.
I think he is prepared. I don’t know how people keep questioning his preparation after he totally crapped out in the 100 then ran a searing 4x1 anchor leg. I think if the Olympics were next week the results would be about the same.
He just can’t run rounds (and may be a total head case). Hell, he couldn’t even run faster in the 2nd round at Rieti last year after he ran WR shutting down in the prelims.
