I know, what did I say in my "best colleges for sprinters" thread… Does anyone know what type of training system Brauman employs?

Braumann was the coach at BCC and gets all his sprinters for there("old boys" hook up). Lucky recruiting not great coaching.

He still coached them at Barton and developed them into what they are now.  I wouldn't call it luck.  Luck doesn't land you studs that can beat big D1 squads.  Good coaching and development does that.

Good coaching and development were certainly a part of Lance's success at Barton CC, but so was lower eligibility standards, generous financial aid packages and going to good meets.  Also the reduced competition among JC's by the elimination of programs such as Blinn and Odessa helped.  It's one of those when opportunity meets preparation scenarios.

Barton County was good long before he got there and they will be good long afterward.  Look at the list of coaches who have been there sometime and it looks like a who's who in the sport.

Bowerman considered himself a teacher more than a coach—the professor of the competitive response, but none of us that preceded him got it like Steve Prefontaine. Steve became the ultimate student—he redefined the word “competitor”. Bowerman and Prefontaine would become a collaborative effort that would turn Hayward Field into a magical place.

All good points to note.  Braumann has helped Tyson Gay set new indoor PRs on a weekly basis and he will be a favorite in my mind to double at indoors this year.  It will be exciting to see what the outdoor season brings as well.

Since u seem to know so much about Brauman, why don't u share what his program looks like? Then we can decide if he's "lucky" or not…

What has he done so far that makes him a great coach? When he was at BCC he got a number of top athletes that had times that would make them automatic NCAA qualifers. Now he is at Arkansa he gets the same level of athletes sent over to him.
When you get a 17year old V.C. running 11.12 you don't have to do much.

Some coaches can't recruit worth a lick.  Some coaches can recruit but don't know enough to (as Coach Schexnayder would put it) just get out of the way.  At a high profile program such as Arkansas, the expectation is that you WILL recruit top level athletes who can score in the NCAA meet right away.  If you can also get that athlete to improve, great, but you must understand that it's a different world in places such as Fayetteville, Baton Rouge, Palo Alto, and Knoxville.  Recruiting is a big part of the game.  Coach Mac wants scorers and it looks like Coach Brauman is producing in that department.  The thought at Arkansas is that if they can get just one or two significant point producers in the sprints and/or jumps then they can win the NCAA title and for 30+ times that has been exactly the case because the distance runners nearly always come through.  There is not that much margin for development in the sprints and jumps at that level.

There have been many coaches that got the level of talent that Lance got at Barton County and did nothing with it so he does indeed deserve the accolades given.  Give it a try sometime and see what you come up with.
