Well went to the sports doctor today and he said the injury is not in the piriformis but more in the upper hamstring. So I just need to take it easy for a few more weeks with strengthening and speed and hopefully be back doing full workouts in a few weeks. Man this is frustrating
Had a sports massage therapist work with me today which did wonders. He said my hips were out of align which was causing a lot of problems. He also said there was a lot of scar tissue build up. Lately I have just been working the upper body and doing light cardio, with no running. I hope with a few more treatments I can be up and running.
I think the injury is coming along good, then it will start to flame up again. I've been doing a lot of pool running lately. I'll probably need to get an MRI once I get to school and see the trainers. Not being able to run is so frustrating.
I hear ya. I've got some tendonitis in my knee that flares up pretty bad from time to time. I can ignore it while I run, but when I lift I can feel it pretty bad.
Get better man, I need to see you on that 1 spot on the podium again.
Well I have been working with the trainer on my hamstring for about a month and a half. We've done everthing from stim, ultrasound, heat, ice, flexibility, strengthening, etc. It hasn't gotten better, if anything its gotten worse. I talked to a orthopedic surgeon at my physical and he said I may have partially torn my hamstring from the origin. The pain is a terrible burning sensation, so sitting a class is painful. If I try to jog I get a sharp pain in my butt/hamstring. I'm seeing a surgeon in a couple weeks to possibly get an MRI which will hopefully pinpoint my injury. Hopefully I dont need surgery but we'll see
Holy hell man, get in there soon, so you can at least get rehabbed in time for the season if you need surgery. How many more seasons of eligibility do you have?
I'm a junior, so I have two years left, if I have an injury redshirt year, I might run my final year of track in grad school. I won't stay 5 years undergrad because it's a private liberal arts school so its expensive. We'll see because I have my appointment with a surgeon a week from today
Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I haven't really done much.
I haven't been able to do much in terms of anything because of my hamstring. I had an MRI about a month ago, it showed no tears but a lot of imflammation with adema, and the surgeon said something small showed up in my hip that he might look at if all else fails. I've been taking anti-imflammatories for the last month, and they helped a lot with the pain, but not enough. So I go see the surgeon tomorrow and I think he wants to do a corticosteroid injection the proximal hamstring. No surgery yet, I just need to get the imflammation down so I can start some more aggresive rehab. Lately I've just been doing upper body lifting, upper body swimming, stretching, etc to stay in shape.
Anyone have any experiences with corticosteroid shots good/bad?
Yea i'v had it in the ankle, worked wonders. Just make sure you get someone who knows EXACTKY what they are doing cause otherwise it'll be a bit of a nuisance or not work. Also i'm sure they'll tell you but rest it for 10-14 days so as to not irritate and damage its efforts of helping you.
I had the shot today, it hurt quite a bit. The doctor said he got a good injection because I'm so skinny. It doesn't hurt afterward because it's still numb. I'm sure it will be stiff and sore tomorrow.
Well the corticosteroid shot didn't work at all. So I am going to see another orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports injuries, hopefully he can help me out.
I saw the other surgeon and he couldn't figure out whats causing all the pain. He said the MRI showed some fluid around the insertion point, and there was a major difference in size of muscles in the pelvis. I don't really know if that's significant. He said I can either see a pelvic specialist, or get another shot. I'm probably going to see the specialist. I need to get healthy soon cuz I can't stand sitting and watching practice and meets.
Well it's been about 9 or 10 months since my pain started. It hasn't gotten any better with tons of treatment, 2 injections, 4 surgeon visits + two doctors. They still can't find the root of the problem. Most of the pain I experience is when I sit, so it makes it hard to go to class or drive. The unaffected side started to hurt near the piriformis because I lean to that side when I sit. I see a neurologist tomorrow to go through more tests, to look for sciatic nerve irritation. I've basically been working the upper body to stay in shape, a little boxing, but nothing with the legs. This is getting really frustrating.
I'm seriously contemplating not doing track next year. I mean even if I do get better, it'll prolly require surgery of some sort. I love track, but I don't want to jeopardize my future. I want to be able to play pick up basketball with my friends, just take part in normal activities. I'll try to have updates from the tests.
