I think doing the longer stuff first will work best for your comeback. For your recovery, it's good that your team is on that page. I started with long runs about 3 weeks out from my surgery and all pain was pretty much gone after 5 weeks, when I eased back into the speed work. You'll be alright.

im doing pretty good myself.  I began jogging 3 weeks post op, dont have access to biking and stuff.  I began doing  workouts on the beach in the water, alot of aerobic conditioning and core work.  Then as of week 5-6 post op i initiated acceleration runs(all work done so far on the beach).  I havent started weight training yet because of unavailabilty of facilities  but im ok so far.  Plus i did a backflip and i was fine.  i'll keep yall posted
