Is it old school to make a tackle and get up and go back to the huddle – no celebrations or sack dances? Is it old school to have to pay your dues? To me, old school means substance over style.  I don't mind a little style thrown in as long as the substance was there first and foremost.  Boys I coached last year were not very good, to be charitable.  Our 4X100 team was slowest in the league.  One day, one of them asked me if they could have a pink baton!  I caught myself before I told them they probably deserved one.  Instead, I told them they were going to have to get a helluva lot faster before making any sort of spectacle of themselves.  They didn't.

Old school can be good and bad. While old school can be all the positive things Vern talked about, it can also be dogmatically sticking to what you've always done in spite of overwhelming research and / or anecdotal evidence to the contrary.
