Where is Coach JJ HUnter at now??

 Signature

Bowerman considered himself a teacher more than a coach--the professor of the competitive response, but none of us that preceded him got it like Steve Prefontaine. Steve became the ultimate student--he redefined the word “competitor”. Bowerman and Prefontaine would become a collaborative effort that would turn Hayward Field into a magical place.

He is retired from the coaching game, loving life, and making a living more in line with his qualifications. He was one of the many who had to decide whether to do something they love but get paid nothing or enter the real world and get paid market value.

Really?? Sad to hear that......I was there when he first graced the world with his coaching talents........  I have had MANY coaches through youth, high school, and college athletics but none have the talent he has.  He should be getting paid market value at a college somewhere heading their track program.  Too good at this to not be teaching sprints, if he really is retired from it.

I can relate to that.  As a first year teacher I make way more $$ than I did as a college coach.  Plus I only got to see my own kids when they were sleeping and on Sundays and that wasn't making it.  Track's loss is the business world's gain!!

Thanks for the info Mike

That's right, he's back working as a Chippendales dancer. I think he got a guaranteed five year deal and gets to keep all his tips that are stuffed.

JJ was a big reason that I got into coaching and I still pick his brain from time to time . . . as long as he doesn't get too complicated, talking about K+ ions and all that medical school smartness.

Darth Vader: He is here.
Governor Tarkin: Obi-Wan Kenobi? What makes you think so?
Darth Vader: A tremor in the Force. The last time I felt it was in the presence of my old master.
Governor Tarkin: Surely he must be dead by now.
Darth Vader: Don't underestimate the Force.

I am just a padawan . . .

Luke: I want to come with you to Alderaan. There is nothing here for me now. I want to learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi like my father.

speak my brother.......

Thanks for the kind words.

Just to clarify:

Yes, I have left coaching, and I don't have any concrete plans to return, but one never knows.

Yes, I am working in the corporate world (Informatics/Clinical Research stuff in the pharma industry) in a similar, but expanded, role that I had prior to entering coaching full-time.

Yes, I miss my former athletes at UM very much, but life is good and I am truly blessed.

Yes, I will miss listening to Ron run his mouth in the coaching box at the UF FL Intercollegiate Meet in January.

No, I will not miss the bus ride to Gainesville to listen to Ron…

Yes, Ron knows I'm joking.

Yes, Todd Lane is truly a sick individual...but that's why we love him...I think.

But I just wanted to make it clear that my decision (one that was a long-time in coming) to leave college coaching was based on many factors, not just the ones that are tangible.

Most of all, I'll just miss hanging with all of the Elite Track "Old Heads", i.e. "The Waffle House Crew".  I've always been proud to say that I was one of your peers.

Mike, Ron, Todd, Carl, KW, Kebba, Lynn, Mike C., Dave are among the best that our sport has to offer and Track & Field is better b/c they are a part of it.

I still plan on attempting to stay "current" (if my work load allows..which it hasn't lately), so I'll be lurking and maybe even show up at a Level 3 from time to time.

Hope all is well with everyone, and best of luck this season.

JJ

Go Canes!

p.s. CW ("The Force is strong in this one") will be the next great jumps/multis coach in the NCAA.  You heard it here first.
