Is Zone 1 refering to an athlete who is average, as far as discipline and self control goes, because there are elite athletes still in Zone 1?  For example, the athlete will eat brownies before practice, only get 4 hours of sleep the night before a meet, or are dehydrated.  Zone 3 reminds me of sales people.  In other words it would be: Work hard, Rest Hard, Play Hard ( also known as a hardcore salesman).  Is this what you are also refering to?  What is the "Everything" that is purposeful, mindful, and directed?  There have been many a hard working, self disciplined, positive, athlete who don't achieve due to bad luck or are not given a chance.  Is this what you mean?
