I recently read this Article on trackshark.com. It gives some insight to the scholarship money available in DI and DII athletics and is a must read for most high school athletes and parents. In actuality, there is more money available by way of the brain rather than the body.

I have to agree with the second to last paragraph in that article from the quote of the soccer player…It’s a crapshoot for soccer, but the biggest crapshoot is track and field, especially for jumpers.  It’s easier for a distance runner cause they can do cross country and distance in track so more money is to the distance man who is good… it pays to be a prefontaine.

This is DEFINITELY true. You get far more bang for your buck to be a distance runner. Here’s the hierarchy as I see it: distance runners (3 seasons / sports, multiple opportunities to score in 2 of them) > sprinters (2 seasons, multiple opportunities to score in both) > field eventers and hurdlers who can do more than one event competently > field eventers who are specialists > javelin throwers.

Really, the only way the latter gets a full ride anymore is if they are mega studs who could score at Nationals.
