I am finishing up “Confessions of a Spoilsport,“ right now and really liked the book. It tells the tale of the Rutgers 1000 and the demise of higher learning at schoools having division 1-a sports.
Personally, I feel that when comparing elitetrack.com to other sports boards and websites that the level of intellect required to understand some concepts is quite a bit higher than for other sites, for example t-nation. I view elitetrack.com as a bridge between the world of athlete-students and the world of student-athletes.
So, I was wondering what everyone’s take on this website is of grades and academics in collegiate and high school sports. I am proud to say that at my community college on a bus ride to a recent meet I noticed that there were at least a few athletes reading books that were not required for a class. And I am even more proud to say that two of them are the best athletes on the team, a high school sub-11 100m runner and a high school sub-15 110 high hurdler.
What causes the gap to grow in between academics and athletics, not just Track and Field but in all sports? For myself, to get better at something I apply the best power I have, not power from my legs like most people have, but the power of knowledge, in hopes that I can understand the technical aspect of an event to a greater level than those around me to give me the competitive edge.
I feel that in Track this gap is not as great as with other sports; but what can we do as the elitetrack.com readers to help bring intelligence back into sports?
