What would you do?

Lets say that a sprinter/jumper is in a tempo based program with little to no speed work throughout the year.  Would it be wise to do accels in the summer and into the start of practice or would it be a waste since those workouts would be few and far between in-season?  Lets also say this individual wants to get stronger/faster during the summer what else would you do, like heavy weights 2-6 reps, plyos, etc?

Also, I want to know what normal total tempo volume in a day is for summer training?

Good idea for a thread.  I just started working on a summer/off season program.  For the most part the emphasis is on strength (lifting, plyos, bounding….), but I’m curious to see what others do for themselves and their athletes for the off-season.  What type of sprinting/Tempo volume if any do you guys do to keep your athletes fresh over the three months or so that you don’t have them?

Personally, I like to keep at least one day of speed a week in my off season training.  I like to just find open meets that I can enter and maybe run a 100 & 200 at it.

I am actually 5 weeks in winter training (I’m in Australia), I have kept 2 track sessions with emphasis on speed.  The sessions have had an easy acceleration in one session and more of a easy endurance at speed component (Intensive tempo type) for my athletes (400m and sprinter/multi eventist)

Our 400 runners always work on speed in the summer.Short accell work on mondays Longer 150 buildups on thurs. Drills are also done during the week.

Our program is a strength based one. But our best sprinting weather is in the summer. Fall is cold. winters have snow spring is also col, snowy or rainy. No indoor facility. So you must adabt. Figure out ways to train speed, even if it doesn’t fit the conventinal method. When you don’t have ideal climate or facilities. You must become more original and think out side the box, when it comes to training.
