Only one was b9g and regardless, it was their first meet. As Mike has said, OHB and shotput are pretty much within a 1m deviation. I don’t know many athletic guys that can’t throw at least 13m with the 16lb, let alone 12lb.

Even if he lived in Europe, money in what events? You can only compete in so many decs and there’s only a few events he’s even competitive at the international level in as an individual. Appearance fee to do what? Get killed in basically any individual event?

I am pretty sure Mike means with adequate shot put training, which means about 3-4 years in the multi-event world.  You can only do so much.

As for the latter yes, and he would get killed in the 100m, but his appearance money would for his throws, he’s an oly medalists and WC gold medalist which hold more weight in Europe, because Clay is a freak at 5’11” and 185 lbs to do the things he does throwing.  Clay has attained the Oly ‘B’ standard in many of the Decathlon events and believe he has the ‘A’ standard or is close in a couple of those.

Great. I know a guy right now that is running meets in Europe and has the B-standard for his event. Sure, he makes some money, but it really isn’t that much.

The appearance fees aren’t huge just for the sake of it. If Bryan has a hard time getting a shoe contract that is near six figures (don’t think he even has that yet? he certainly didn’t in 05-07), how is he going to get big appearance fees? If he was drawing huge attention, he would have gotten a company to roll over for him. Which decathletes are generating the sizable appearance fees you talk about?

There is no way he would have been an 8K or even 7K decathlete coming out of HS with that frame.

Roman Serble makes quite comfortable money again he’s an Olympic Gold Medalists, but no one in the US cares unless you have Oly Gold or the WR.  They don’t care about WC Gold’s or Oly Silver as much.  How many sprinters can command great appearance fees at 100M?  3 after Bolt! How Many 200m runners?  3 Maybe 4!, Gay, Bolt, Carter and Spearman.  How about 400m runners?  Wariner and Merritt, and even with his WC silver Rock could hardly get any.  Clay’s problem is he lives and trains in the US and competes in Europe mostly.

Dan O’Brien and Dave Johnson made real good money as decathletes and they are part of the reason no one wants to touch decathletes with endorsements.
