Yeah those approaches looked nothing like the ones i did yesterday in training…

Haha, stop the video during the landing at 0:29…makes me cry!

Today was a rest day as this is an unloading type week for me…

My confidence is high still, yesterday proved something to me. Tomorrow i am jumping from my new approach. It’s an important session for me going into my last 2 early season meets…

Nick..
Are you concerned the new start to the approach may have a negative affect for you at the board??

A little bit yeah…

But the over riding factor this season so far has been my landing and not my steering. There are no signs that i have a steering problem anymore.

IF my landing was good, then i could keep my controlled approach and still jump 7.70m+ but becuase it is not good, i have to bring alot more of my speed in order to jump that distance.

These next 2 meets will tell me if i am able to steer with this faster run. If the fouling percentage is up alot then we can put it down to this. But until my landing is good and consistant, i have no choice but to bring more speed or i will remain a 7.60m jumper.

RE: the new approach initiation. I don’t like it but I’m willing to experiment…especially as these next two meets are not championship / major competition settings. Nick’s been asking to do it basically since he started working with me last year and I’ve always insisted on not doing it because he was already inaccurate enough with a static start that I didn’t feel adding greater variability on to an already unknown would help. Also, I’m kind of of the viewpoint that Nick’s speed is not his limiting factor right now. I think he has the wheels to go 8.0m+ if he brings 95+% of his maxV to the runway, hits a nice takeoff and doesn’t flub the landing.

As he said, it’s an experiment. The agreement I made was that we can try it for the next two meets. If any of the process goals aren’t met (which he’s exceeded at every meet thus far) in the next two meets then we have to go back to the static start. The number one thing I’m concerned about is the fouling. Even if he goes to the next two meets and jumps 7.85m (pr by 0.25m) but fouls more than 50% of the jumps I would say it’s not worth it because the goal of this season (all of 2009) is to improve accuracy, consistency and average competition performance. Getting a single huge PR is actually secondary to me at this point in Nick’s long term development. Additionally, I don’t think the start was where Nick’s problem was. I think we both agreed that his last 15m at the last 2 competitions lacked his usual aggressiveness to the board.

Having said all that, if it works and Nick is still able to hit the process goals that I’ve set out I’ll be fine with it. I’m not sure if jumping further will actually impact my opinion since I don’t think that type of start produces a faster last 5-10m.

AM)
Short warm up
Dynamic flex
Sprint drills

2x20m sprints
Full approach runs - x6 (land last 3)

PM)
Clean TEST - 315!!!!!!!!!!! Huge PR (+15 lbs)

Dynamic step ups - 3x6
Hurdle hops - 3x5

Today was a huge day really. This morning was OK, very good on runway and was consistant at jumping around 7.50m-60m. The new run is a little difficult to keep hitting the starting mark consistantly and i realised today that there is little point in changing it and risking fouling a lot again. I will now keep approach the same but put the pedal to the floor throughout!
The clean test was just rediculus. It was totally unexpected as well. I thought 300 coming into today and 315 was just brilliant. I also got 320 nicely on my shoulders but just didn’t stand up with it. I’m really happy with that as thats a big break through for me. I have enough power and speed to jump big now, i just have to put the 2 together!

Happy to here you are not changing your start, especially considering that you are on the verge of a breakthrough performance. You are lucky to have a great coach.

Just to be clear I actually didn’t try to talk Nick out of it. I told him what I thought were the negatives of that kind of start and gave him free reign to experiment for the next two meets using the criterion I mentioned above to assess whether we’d continue with it. Nick made the decision I was hoping for and he made it largely on his own.

315 clean is nice! That’s top 5 among all track athletes I’ve ever worked with. Made even more impressive by the slight reduction in bodyweight this week.

Hey nice job on the clean max, I was happy when I squatted that much.  What was the rest time on those 150’s?
