That article annoyed the hell out of me when I read it a few days ago in the paper version of the magazine. It just seemed to me like a bunch of bitching.
The author characterized anything between a multivitamin and a steroid as in a fuzzy area and seemed to try to convince his target audience that elite athletes were gaining a further advantage over normal folk not just because of their genetics (which was itself talked about as if it were a dirty secret of top athletes) and hard work but because they were using fuzzy area supplements, most of which in reality could be gotten from food, though this would be unreliable and impractical hence the supplementation. He seemed to imply that this, as much as steroids, was corrupting pro sport and should change our view of how we look at sport champions.
He spent very little time talking about possible genetic enhancement and most of the time talking about fuzzy supplements and steroid talk.
