I am going to redshirt next year for decathlon. I want to get some throwing impliments to work on technique and motor development in the offseason. I just got access to a 12 lb shot and might be getting access to a javelin in the near future. I looked online and a discus isn’t that expensive, maybe $40.

But should I make sure I get all college weight impliments? Such as going out and buying a 16 lb shot and 2k discus? Or would high school weights suffice for first time technique training? Also, for javelin they make little 800g balls and handles with elastic like the kind pitchers use for training. Would something like that be worthwile to buy?

I maintain that one of the “worst” planning moves many of our local throwers and combined events athletes made this winter was waiting so long to work on technique (some did but nowhere close to the majority) so if you are at school where you lose a large part of the year for summer outdoor activities to winter weather then anything you can do will be of help (almost regardless of cost!)...also if you are indoors not every place is set up to practice throws with discus or javelin and you may want to invest in more shots as well, depending on how many you will be able to access (throwing one, retrieving, throwing one, retrieving, can get old, fast).  Most throwers I know use a mix of under weight, actual weight and over weight shots.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll take that into consideration.
