Getting better. It’s not easy and not clear. In college, we are often handed baggage with athletes that come in with a poor training age, bad mechanics, bad attitudes, and often injuries we were not aware of. This year I have a clean canvas. Great kids and great potential. So how do I know I am doing a good job? How does one compare who is doing well and who is just a figure head. Do I stink? Does my program work or do the athletes believe it works? Am I progressive? Am I too conservative? And so on. My point is when you get a 11.3 100m guy what should they be in 4 years on average. True, each athlete has a unique background but I think some measurement can be done. I remember one athlete that improved over 4 years even when he did less work. He was lazy but uber talented. When one looks like they lift weights and are contest dieting when they eat burger king and play video games it’s not the same for some kid that adds fat and looks weak after a 3 month layoff. Context is king. At the end of the day we need some sort of evidence that we are doing a good job or better job than years past. It’s all relative. My goal is not to get too greedy with development but make sure I am not too patient that we are not pushing the body to safe limits.
