Many coaches are using blood tests to gage the health status of athletes, and to monitor changes. For me, I like to see a basic blood test three times a year if possible to see the start of training, mid season (February for many), and right after the last major competition. I love the Medical Lab Tests app for the iphone or ipod touch. For three dollars you can navigate and find the medical test and lab value explanation rapidly and without fluff. Very practical and down to earth. Often blood work is looked at as a nice to have, but student health services and private insurance trigger blood work more easily, and walk in clinics are less expensive. Hormone testing is not cheap, but that can be done less frequently and the immune system being compromised can render even the mightiest of athletes powerless.
