Guarding is often talked about in elite circles with previous injuries and acute problem in loading. Patrick Ward talked about pain in his blog and included DOMS as well as performance. Guarding is a problem with chronic injuries because the guarding sometimes becomes a trigger for re-injury because of altered mechanics or synchronization issues. Injury Cascade Trees have been mapped out with high level therapists to follow how guarding can create new problems that seem to spread like viruses. The natural repair process of eccentric loading is often removed because of fear, causing a delay in return to play. The role of the therapist needs to be a shrink at times to give athletes confidence in the injury site so they can exorcise the demons of past injuries. Some of the research from Cameron Hill is not published yet but lengthening of the tissues eccentrically is vital for completeness of injury.
