I have been looking at measuring sleep practically for years and actigraphy is a promising solution. As the mobile market continues to evolve consumer electronics, I predict that we will start seeing some problems with privacy and athlete’s lifestyles. Athletes are notorious for being active, and this has always been the case since ancient Greece and the Roman Gladiators. While the Canucks lost to the Bruins (on my birthday I might add), they did invest in a sleep consultant to help with fatigue. With west coast teams being in a disadvantage in general, it’s vital all teams and programs work on small but measurable interventions. Education is nice, but small tricks of the trade can help, especially post training nutrition. Many athletes will pass-out without a real or liquid meal after heavy competition and travel, creating a deficit in recovery.
