The use of Arbitrary Units in periodization is bad sport science. While it’s nice to see a pretty chart on a powerpoint it doesn’t drill down to the real issues with training loads. Rugby sport science is a crown jewel in the sporting world but what I am seeing in the NFL has now surpassed what I thought was the most progressive. Due to the wealth of the players, we are seeing a lot of complimentary therapies and training, especially with EMS and soft tissue work. After observing the biological sampling of one NFL athlete during the season (Monday morning to Friday Evening) and the HRV status three times a day, it was clear that adaptations to reactionary recovery decreased the ability to repair and achieve good tone. Training design needs to lead performance, not chase athletes around with recovery drinks. Nobody loves regeneration than myself, but the 48 hours after training starts with the GPP.
