The single leg squat is a great exercise that can be done with nearly anyone anywhere. The key is doing it very well as each exercise is an opportunity to improve function and evaluate (measure) what is not optimal. Unfortunately we must deal with the convenience factor of integers instead of angles and anatomy. Subjective Summary plagues sports performance because we have not drilled down deep enough to see what the true cause of some of the problems with athletes are. Single leg squats are great evaluation tools because one simple exercise can create nearly 30 specific compensation patterns. In real world situations no coach is going to check off such problems, but as technology increases and motion capture improves, our screening will be beyond the simple digits and move to real dynamics.
