Instead of summarizing the notes of the Rice Speed Symposium I felt that ensuring people not only got the direct source, but the chance to acquire the presentation DVDs for personal review. Casey Thom’s presentation was on speed and included some good research I think we should read for ourselves. This is not a vertical vs horizontal debate, but much of the data debated on other threads is included. Some research says that we should not segregate forces as their is a symbiotic relationship with all three forces during foot strike, but some emphasis work specifically will be needed because of specific muscle action. I personally believe vertical stiffness is very challenging and limits the horizontal component because of the time sequence. Rice is also hosting another Speed Symposium and I am thinking of attending myself. Click on the link and you can find some great materials and educational resources such as some informative PDFs.
