One athlete came to me for a week before camp, and he had a history of muscle pulls, and his agent was thinking it was some sort of imbalance on the phone. When I found out about his use of farmer’s walks for energy system development my quip was to to see that the the marathon progression wasn’t because of crosstraining at barns. I noticed that he seemed to have a lot of system tightness and was running very tight. Usually I spend more time sharing how athletes need to shut down groups at various times and good tempo sessions should not feel like your traps are getting smoked at all. Running with good foot strike at optimal speeds and rest intervals allows the body to acquire mastery since repetition is necessary. A few cues of relaxing the shoulders is not enough, and constant exposure to tasks that are familiar has helped me more than verbal cues.
