This year’s World Championships has been a bunch of surprises and some disappointments. Some favored athletes have failed to show up because of injuries or medal because of false starts, DQs, fouling, and just not peaking when it counts. It’s not easy and I have missed tapers, overtrained, undertrained, poorly sequenced, and injured athletes myself. We all make mistakes and I especially like the blog entries of Brooks Johnson sharing candid feelings of the ups and downs of coaching. David Oliver didn’t medal or run well in the finals, but he was a class act when things don’t go his way. He is one of my favorite athletes as he is a professional. The lesson here is to have the constitution to keep going, as the game is not just a sport measured in seconds.
