My heart sank when the Redsox lost last night, but seeing that my former place of employment did something amazing (internship), I have to hand it to the Rays for being mentally tough. Statistically, if the Red Sox were healthy they would have not been there in the first place, but that’s why you play the games. When the Rays made it the World Series, much of it was because they were healthy at the right time. Sometimes peaking when it counts is not about periodization, but just being able to complete at the last competition. As salaries continue to be so high in professional sports, accountability is increasing as well. We are seeing more and more fan access to sports performance and medical statistics, and pretty soon the sports bars will be dropping terms like athlete screening and return to play.
