    As has been stated, your friend was probably wrong unless he want’s you to be a bodybuilder. A good guiding principal is to train movements and not muscles. By this I mean don’t get caught up in training specific muscle groups. Instead focus on the movements and actions that are required for success in your sport. In track this means development of ankle knee and hip extension strength as well as postural strength.
