Good for you guys. He shows some real potential. Based on the numbers, I assume he is in “Intermediate Boys”?
With an open PB of 14’6″, he should still be able to manage 14′, which would pull him up by 230 points. One thing I’ve seen work well for Decathlon vaulters is to shorten their approach. By the time you get to vault, you are shot, and a 7 (or even 6) Stride run makes life a lot easier. (Bryan Clay has jumped on a 7-stride approach forever – I’d bet if he grabbed bigger sticks and moved to a 9 or 10, he could learn to vault 5.40+ open, but is not work the risk of consistency and fatigue).
5:34 is just terrible. With his 400 time, that is inexcusable. 5:00 should be where he’s at. That is 250 more points. I’d suggest (in prep for next year) that twice a week you do this simple workout for either warm-up or cool down:
800m – at 1500 pace – (ie – 2:40)
REST 2 minutes- but keep moving
400m – 80 seconds
Walk across infield (no more than 60 seconds rest)
300m in under 1 minute
Doesn’t take too much out of him, and gets him used to 5:00 pace – and also realizing how easy that pace is to run.
He should easily be 6000+ even today.
