Wow, kids should get over it? I disagree, if it’s going to help our youth learn and be more successful then I’m all in, I will never tell a kid or anyone else to “get over it”. As a student I always worked harder for African American teachers because I felt they cared more about me as a student/person. African American teachers also hold African American students to a higher standard and demand a lot more from them.
I would not be surprised if many black guys just were not aware of the need. People relate to others like them but people have to get over that. It’s about common ground, not differences.
One reason male college attendance is declining is that often times jobs that do not necessarily require college degrees are paying a lot more than jobs that require a non technical undergrad degree. Example, in the business I am in when the market is booming we pay a lot more than what these guys will get coming out of college in finance, marketing, management, education, etc. Of course they have to work outside year round and travel extensively but it is not uncommon for someone to come work over a summer in between semesters and never go back to school even though we encourage them to. I am waiting for the day that half of our field guys have college degrees.
