I doa lot of box squats as I am rehabbing from tendonitis and it is easier on my knees. I don’t use a wide stance either. You can lift more weight using a wide stance but keeping your feet straight ahead with them placed about the same width apart as a regular squat really makes you work hard from the hips, glutes and hamstrings. I have used the wide stance inthe past but found my hips got too beat up. Keeping the feet closer together seems to alleviate that problem.
