Put it this way…to me, real evidence is the guy who pumps out state champions like clockwork doing training that ‘published study evidence’ says is not ideal.
This is anecdotal evidence though…and most of the time you can reconcile what is being done by that coach. Most of the time it comes down to the fact that the training really isn’t so far from ideal in the first place (aka Hart’s protocols), the coach is a master motivator that can get his / her athletes to succeed in spit of whatever they do in training, or they are a big drug coach (i.e Graham). In all cases (except perhaps the motivator situation), there’s still quantifiable types of evidence (i.e- 400m is 30% aerobic so Hart’s program works well; Trevor Graham has more drugs than any other coach, etc) that allow at least a semi-clear picture to be painted if there is any seeming discrepancy.
