I think PWO nutrition is essential to a successful training program. I don’t however think that SURGE or other specialty drinks necessarily have to be the source. I think a fresh fruit and whey drink is probably more nutritious although quite a bit less convenient. My general thinking is that if for whatever reason you don’t have the time or resources to make your own PWO shake or meal, taking something like SURGE is infinitely better than taking nothing. Incidentally, I do think taking in some easily digestible protein early in the morning would be a good idea. As for the supplement companies, it’s probably best to be a skeptic with everything they claim or suggest as they have a vested interest in selling more product even when it won’t do you any good.
