There was a jumper at Oregon I knew, Leonidas Watson, started late in track long jumping for the first time at a community college and a year later becoming a PAC 10 threat. He used the hang style because of the reasons you've stated earlier (just too technical to hitch kick). Isn't the hitch kick to limit forward rotation anyway? If you can limit the forward rotation and hang style and are improving in power and speed, then good things will happen like Leonidas… Hope this is helpful.
