I drop them for 3-4 weeks during the championship meets. If you have been doing strength work for a while your strength will stay with you. If you have only been training for a two months then your strength doesnt stay as long. I believe Mikes saying of soon ripe then soon rotten would work here. My kids like the break of not squatting the last few weeks because we have squatted so much during the season. Some kids might need it for psychological reasons or for tonus but the majority welcome the change.
