Just my two bits (and coming from a guy who hasn’t scored as well as you) but most of the top decathletes I’ve known don’t try to make up points or think about a good event giving them a cushion… They are big on thinking “1 event at a time” – and even 1 attempt at a time. Kind of like golf, where the only thing that matters is the shot you’re taking that second. Seems like that is when the big PR’s happen in individual events, also allows you to not beat yourself up when you have the inevitable screwed up event.
This is usually the way I recommend approaching it too but I did have one athlete who was great when ‘under the gun’ and could play the catch up game. Not many like that though.
