Thanks guys! Was very exciting weekend and I’ll try and recap best I can.
Shot Put: 13.70
Started off pretty shitty actually but I am glad I didn’t get too down on myself, thankfully. Didn’t feel very fast for 60m and I attribute that to not getting in enough high quality speed reps prior to race. I had to look at some PV poles and that slowed me down some and that coupled with trying to conserve too much energy probably attributed to slower time. LJ didn’t feel super fast and I was lowering/reaching a little too much. The 7.06 I didn’t touch the board so I think it could have been close to a 24 foot jump. Honestly though looking back on it, I am kind of glad these first two events didn’t go my way because I was very hungry for last two of the day. Did more shot warmups than normal and did several without a reverse and was throwing out near 13m, it wasn’t great warmups and I honestly wasn’t thinking it would be a great day. First one I just hit it right and didn’t collapse my chest. Big PR for me and it placed me third for that event. So I placed higher in shot than in lj and 60m…go figure. HJ warmups felt great, I think I surprised some people with a 5 step easy clearance over 2.05. Sat around for an hour until I was up which I hate! Came in at 2m and it was ugly. Passed to 2.06 and didn’t get it until 3rd attempt! Freaked some people out but I was still rewarming up even though I did a bunch of stuff to try and get ready, its not the same. Cleared 2.09,2.12,2.15 all on first attempts. Couldn’t shake the other guy who was leader which definitely helped motivate me. Got 2.18 on 3rd attempt and I believe my attempt at 2.15 was actually better than 3rd clearance at 2.18. Was a hep facility record and big PR for me. Knew I could hit that just a matter of time. 2 out of 3 attempts at 2.21 were pretty decent..especially the last one which was probably a 2.19 clearance I would guess to put it into perspective.
So that was day 1 and I was nervous as shit afterwards! I was doing the math and I thought I could possibly win but was mentally effing myself about if I made a mistake or this or that happen etc. Went into day 2 with better mental state. Had great hurdle warmups but actual race sucked. I mean sucked. clobbered hurdle 3 and lost all the wind in my sail as I watched Harlan go past me. I was taking off too close to hurdles again and I paid for it. Should have backed off some and tried to keep quicker steps. I think it would have easily been sub 8 if I hadn’t done that. But still decent points so couldn’t complain. PV warmups felt good and I had help from some IU guy there. I wanted to grip up to 15 6 but guy suggested I didn’t so I used 15′ pole. So very happy to clear 14 1 gripping at 15. Didn’t get inverted or do much correctly other than take off and slight swing…you know how that goes. Going into 1k I though I could possibly go 2:40. That was the number I set for myself. I thought the guy who was leading was going to latch on to me but his PR was much slower and I don’t think he had a ton in him at that point. Came through first lap in 30 and didn’t feel half bad. I was ahead of pace the whole time. After 3 laps I knew I was going to run something big and just hammered last two even though they were still probably 32 second laps…I worked for them. Crossed the line and kept looking back for the guy who was leading but he was way back. Looked to the wife and said… I think I won. Was an awesome feeling to say the least.
Hardee obviously would have kicked my ass if he was in it but it was a pretty solid field and this gives me a ton of confidence going into outdoors. Going to enjoy this for a couple of days then gear up for outdoors!
