While I agree to a certain extent, what would be the alternative? Less speed work?? More middle int. work??
I do have trouble recovering from sprinting all out 3x per week but what else can be done?
And about "Charlie Francis' training model as pzale mentioned, all we are really talking about is a short to long program which makes sense scientifically and anecdotally. Its even pretty much what USATF coaches ed. teaches and what Mike uses.
I use a short-to-long with all my sprinters. We sprint 3x a week similar to 'CF's program.' I have no doubt his system works. Many other coaches successfully implement similar programs (he didn't invent the use of speed work or the short-to-long periodization model) so I AM ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that CF's training protocol is effective. I just tend to think that there are others using short-to-long protocols with similar philosophies (in some cases copied in others not) who have not produced 9.8 guys and that the common denominator may be the PEDs or the PEDs in combination with a short-to-long program with frequent use of high intensity sprinting.
