I did something along those lines this year, and I liked it. I'm not going to say it was mostly squats and deadlifts over the olys earlier on (olys were always in the mix), but there was slightly more of a focus on the heavier squatting variations. I phased out the squats, deadlifts, etc. in late comp. and peaking, and arrived at olys alone. It all coincided with the shift on the force-velocity scale and my need, as a jumper, to feel extra springy and fresh during those most important competitions. In the past, heavy squatting seemed to be making my legs unnecessarily tired when the competitions counted the most (even if done earlier in the week, away from the competition). I've heard of some other athletes making this type of transition, as well, with good results.
