A downhill is a good way to pick up speed without any additional effort if they are run with the proper technique.
It’s a good idea to carry your arms a bit wider for balance if it’s a fairly long and/or steep hill. Try to stay on the balls of your feet and let your stride become quicker without getting too lengthy (that part will take a bit of effort). Fight the natural tendency to put on the brakes by landing on your heels. I always tell people to try to stay perpendicular to the hills. When you start leaning back and fighting the hill, not only do you slow down, but you will also put alot of stress on your lower back and shins.
So, quicken your pace and try to stay on the balls of your feet. Practice this skill when running on a grassy downhill on your distance days. It’s a skill you can master-especially if you have good flexibility in your hip flexors and glutes. Try to keep your back kick from being too high on the downhills and that will help you keep a quick cadence going down.
CC is a thinking persons game and it looks like you have the proper thoughts about how to improve all facets of the race. Keep up the great work!
