I wouldnt go that heavy at all, its just for maintenance. I currently would clean and bench for 3 sets of 6 at around 70-75% 1RM. Week before a big race probably even go 65% 1RM. Id squat even lighter, sometimes I do 3 sets at 60%, sometimes 2 sets, sometimes 1, depending on how I feel.
Post Olympics 2008 I only did 3 sets of 3 on clean at fairly heavy, say 80-85% 1RM, and ran well. Indoors 2007, I did 3 sets of 2 at upto 90% 1RM, and ran well then too. The key thing Im trying to say is jut maintain strength, it doesnt matter how! You can play about and see what suits you. And, as it usually is quite close to my last race (i.e. race sat, lift mon), the weight is often a bit lighter due to fatigue.
Let me know if you need any more help!
Why so many reps? 70-75% for 6reps is more like a 90-100% effort.
Dunno if you remember a few years ago…when i was coached by UKA LJ coach, i did the same thing during competitions 3×6@75% and you said the same thing to me then…lol.
I guess it’s the British way ?
I remember, well think about it, 85% is most people 5rm; doing inseason 70-75% for 3×6 could be pushing the envelope little too much. I prefer 2-3 reps for 2-3 sets at 70-75% at very slow speeds, these guidelines maintain 90-95% of my athletes strength.
