Our relay performances is just flabbergasting. I know things get more difficult as you get faster but c’mon….this isn’t THAT hard. When I was at USMA we made more than 40 straight connections (spanning 2.5 years). Not all of them were great (in fact many were bad) but during this time span we never dropped the baton and we never ran out of the zone. We practiced relay exchanges about 15-20x per year. We did this while regularly substituting people in and out of the relay. How is it possible that the U.S. cannot achieve ANY level of competency in this relatively simple skill. It’s just unbelievable, especially when you consider how much of a margin of error (due to our speed advantage) we almost always have.
