Her league meet is not for another week. She ran a 400 at an informal allcomers junior high track meet yesterday and did 65 (1 sec better than her league record). The 800 was immediately after the 400, and she was still pretty well spent and didn’t want to do the 800.
She has decided that she’s going to do both the 800 and 400 at her league meet. She keeps asking me if doing the 800 5 hrs before the 400 will affect her 400 time and if so by how much, potentially. Technically, I don’t know if it will impact it or not, but I keep telling her she should go out and do her best in both and see what happens. The 400 & 800 records are motivating her, which I think is not a bad thing. It gives her somethign to shoot for. I’m just trying to make sure she has a balanced mindset that she should just have fun and do the best that she is capable of.
She has no experience running 800 races. However, with regard to training, it seems like she’s probably done enough to do well in the 800 and be able to recover for the 400. By the time of the league meet, she will have been training 3 days a week for ~6 weeks. She has been primarily doing intervals ie 200’s, 300’s and an occasional 400. Some workouts are with more rest between emphasizing speed on each interval. eg, a series of 200’s between 32-34 with full recovery. Other workouts are with only partial recovery, eg 8 200’s at 40 with 1:20 rest in between each one (she starts a new one every 2 minutes). Back in March she did an occasional 2 mile run, played on 2 basketball teams from Jan-Mar, and is currently playing on a soccer team, so she has had no shortage of exercise.
